In 2007 Colonel Wright assumed command of the 1st Battalion, 509th Parachute Infantry Regiment at Fort Polk, Louisiana. Upon taking command he revised the battalion’s role to reflect not only the ongoing counter-insurgency/counter-terror role but also the evolving role of US forces in Iraq to advise and assist local security forces. The value of this training was validated by the feedback received from Army units deployed to Iraq following their JRTC rotations. While at Fort Lewis Col. Wright wrote a book about his three tours in Iraq, Iraq Full Circle: From Shock and Awe to the Last Combat Patrol. He then moved to Fort Bragg, North Carolina where he was assigned as assistant chief of staff for the XVIII Airborne Corps as it prepared to deploy to Afghanistan. Tragically, Col. Wright passed away in 2013. Accepting on this honor on his behalf is his wife Mrs. Wendy Wright and son 2LT Dillon Wright.
