15 Aug 1944 - 2nd Lt Hubert J. Fiander O-25745 Hq Co 509th PIB participates in Operation DRAGOON the airborne invasion of Southern France.

Capt Bud Siegel explains that the unit got the wrong kind of money in their escape kits. The kits had Italian Lira instead of Francs so Maj. Apperson insisted on collecting it from the Soldiers and exchanging for Francs so that they would have it to use. Capt Siegel told him to not bother and that the Soldiers know what to do with money no matter what kind it is. Maj. Apperson did it anyway. 2nd Lt Fiander drove the jeep, Maj. Apperson rode in the passenger seat and Lt Lee Webb a linguist with the 2680th Military Intelligence Company rode in the back. On the way back to the rear to exchange the money through a Finance Officer the jeep hit a mine and blew the jeep to pieces. The money was scattered all over the road. All the guys picked up the money.
