Under the provisions of AR 600-45 you are hereby awarded a Silver Star for gallentry in action. CITATION: GUY W. JEANES, (38058524), Private First Class, Headquarters Company, 2nd Battalion, 509th Parachute Infantry. For gallantry in action, on 19 September 1943, near Montella, Italy. Private First Class JEANES, a member of a parachute unit operating behind enemy lines, volunteered to carry demolition equipment for a patrol with the mission of blowing up a bridge being used to advantage by the enemy. After a ten mile march over rugged, mountainous terrain, the parachutist reached their objective and were immediately fired upon by an enemy patrol from the opposite end of the bridge. Private First Class JEANES, dangerously exposed to his own supporting fire and under continuous enemy fire, crawled forward with his demolition equipment to the end of the bridge and placed his charge. Ten minutes later he had successfully completed his hazardous task, and the bridge was destroyed. Private First Class JEANES courage and coolness under fire were an inspiration to his comrades and are exemplary of the high traditions of the Armed Forces. Entered military service from San Augustine, Texas. Signed Lieutenant General MARK W. CLARK, Commanding, HEADQUATERS FIFTH ARMY A. P. O. #464 U. S. Army
