Under the provisions of Army Regulations 600-45, as amended, you are awarded a Silver Star for gallantry in action. CITATION: "JOSEPH W. LEE, (20350108), Corporal, Infantry, United States Army. For galleantry in action. On the morning of 27 January 1944, Corporal LEE was participating in the attack of a well-fortified enemy position near Carroceto, Italy. Upon reaching a ditch 150 yards from the objective, his unit became the target for heavy machine gun and small arms fire. From its position, the unit was unable to observe the direction of enemy fire in order to eliminate it. Realizing the situation, Corporal LEE volunteered to assault a house 70 yards distant, whic overlooked the enemy position. Using a smoke grenade for concealment, he ran through enemy machine gun, small arms and mortar fire, forced his way into the house, and obtained a position of vantage at a window facing the enemy. From this point he brought automatic rifle fire to bear on the enemy machine gun, putting it out of action, killing one of the enemy and forcing the capture of three others. He remained at this post for six and one half hours, constantly under machine gun and small arms fire. The determined initiative and firing skill of Corporal LEE aided the assault platoon to advance and successfully take its objective. Entered military service from Annapolis, Maryland." Signed Lt.
