Director/newsletter editor (Dayle DeBry) is looking for any information on Jack B. Mariott in order to have a bronze veterans memorial plaque placed at the Veterans Court of Honor at Lancaster Cemetery District in Lancaster, CA. Jack was born ca. 1924-25 in Arkansas, the son of Burton (Bert) Oliver and Nona Rachel Mariott. By 1930, the family was living in Winfield, Cowley Co., Kansas. Jack had at least one sibling, a sister Nadine, who was born ca. 1926 in Kansas.

Bert and Nona are listed on the Index to Registered Voters, Lancaster Precinct No. 5 in 1938-1942 living at 1036 Beech Avenue in Lancaster. Unfortunately, the numbering system has changed on the streets since then. If anyone knows how to convert them to present day numbers, please let me know! Berts occupation was a clerk at that time. Jack attended Antelope Valley High School, but I don't find him listed as a graduate. I believe he may have gone through 3 1/2 years of high school, then enlisted in the U.S. Army before he would have graduated.

On January 11, 1944, Jack enlisted in the U.S. Army and was a Private in the U.S. Army infantry with orders to go to the North African theater. While at the Headquarters of the Airborne Training Center he received Special Order #4. Jack became part of an elite unite of the Army, assigned to Co. G (Prov), 2nd Bn., 509th Parachute Infantry Battalion nicknamed the Geronimos would become the most decorated paratroop unit of World War II.

On February 29, 1944 Jack was reported as a Prisoner of War, captured in the vicinity of Anzio, Italy. It was reported that Jack escaped the prison camp, but was recaptured then shot. March 7, 1946 would be the date reported as his death, but on 21 March, 1946 he was reported died as a P.O.W. at Stalag 2B Hammerstein, Prussia. Jack is still listed along with 206 other servicemen as unaccounted for American POWs held by the German government. His name is among those memorialized on the Lorraine American Cemetery in St. Avold, France.

For his service and sacrifice to his country, Jack was awarded the Bronze Star, Purple Heart Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, and the Parachutist Badge. If anyone has any information of Jack or his family, please call me or send me an e-mail at: lancastercem@verizon.net or ddebry@roadrunner.com.
