22 Jan 1944 - conducted an Amphibious landing at Anzio, Italy known as Operation SHINGLE.
Millican is mentioned on page 220 of the book STAND IN THE DOOR by Charles Doyle and Terrell Stewart.
25 Jan 1944 - was the first day since the landings at Anzio that the 509th came into contact with the enemy. At 0730 the 509th moved out to its first objective reaching it at 1000 hours. C Company remained in reserve as A and B companies moved forward toward the second objective, B Co on the left and A Co on the right. Both A and B Companies came into contact with the enemy. B Company moved into the attack upon receiving enemy fire. B Company was stopped after moving 500 yards by enemy mortar and machine gun fire. Lt McKinney with 25 men equipped with BARs and LMGs attached. Sgts Robert B David, Howard E. Laudwig, and Pvt Robert R. Mongeon hit with shrapnel. Lt Parks killed with shrapnel, Pvt Johnnie W. Millican hit with shrapnel. Millican died later, he was the second to be killed in action at Anzio. The Germans had been manning outposts in houses. The 509th mortar teams moved up to a ravine set up and returned fire on the houses silencing the Germans.
