SUMMARY OF SERVICE:

Alfred (we called him Fred) was brought up like a lot of veterans of World War II during the depression. He came from a poor but very close family, in a tough Italian neighborhood. He could make the family laugh at the dinner table just by his being there. Fred also could be very protective of his family, especially his younger brothers and sister. He was a leader even back then, telling us how we should stay out of trouble and not hang with the wrong kids, as there would be hell to pay. Like everyone else of that era he had to earn spending money, because mom and dad had none to spare. He would shine shoes in front of a store to make some money for himself, or set pins in a bowling alley on Saturdays. He was excellent at sports, and once swam across the Delaware river (when it was clean). He also could hit a baseball a long way. But the most startling thing about him, was the fact that he was able to get into the Army when he was just sixteen years old, around late 1940. I personally don't know the details but I checked with my older brother who is an Air Corps veteran, and he told me my dad got him out when World War II started because he was too young. But as soon as he turned eighteen he joined up again this time as a paratrooper (it figures). (above information submitted courtesy of his younger brother)
