509th PIA

Assistant Gunner carries the M1919A4 LMG with pintle and Traverse and Elevation device attached across the obstacle course at Chilton Foliat, Hungerford, England 1942. He is using shoulder pads under his suspenders to carry the load. The front straps which are normally attached to the cartridge belt, are being used to wrap around the barrel and grip to secure it to his body. Two other paratroopers are necessary to put this LMG into action, a Gunner who carries the tripod and an Ammo Bearer.

Gunners are carrying a tripod over their right shoulder and a wooden ammunition can. The Assistant Gunner is carrying the M1919A4 and the Ammo bearers are carrying a wooden ammo can as well. Other items that would be carried are a spare barrel, oiler, and a spare parts and tool kit. Chilton Foliat, Hungerford, England 1942.

LMG Squad. In addition to Ammo Bearers in the LMG section, every paratrooper would carry some crew served weapon ammunition such as a belt of 30.06, rifle grenades, bazooka rockets, mortar rounds or demolition that could be passed off when needed once on the ground.
